Our first free day in Russia and I spent the entire day reading Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky. Around 5pm, when I finished, a group of us went to the Market Place for dinner and then set out for the night tour of the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood. This church was built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated and was built to honor his memory. Walking up to the cathedral I was absolutely sunned by its beauty, the colors, the onion-domes and the intricate mosaics stopped me in my tracks and are worth admiring. We were a little misled by the hotel Concierge because there was no night tour, just night admission, nevertheless, we purchased our tickets and went in. The interior was incredible; mosaic’s covered the interior from floor to ceiling and into each dome. The church is pretty small inside compared to St. Isaac’s but we still spent almost an hour admiring each individual mosaic. The church was empty inside and completely silent. I was infatuated.
